And How to Make Your Products Stand Out on the Shelf

Cheers to a Good Label

In a crowded marketplace where visual identity often drives first impressions, your wine or beer label is more than just packaging. It’s a direct extension of your brand, your story, and your product quality. A well designed label can influence purchasing decisions within seconds, making it a critical component of your marketing strategy.

Whether you’re launching a new vintage or refining an existing line, following proven label design practices can help elevate your product and strengthen brand recognition.

Prioritize Clarity and Compliance

Before focusing on creativity, ensure your label meets all regulatory requirements. Alcohol labels must include specific information such as alcohol content, volume, government warnings, and producer details. Missing or incorrect information can delay distribution or lead to compliance issues. Work with a label provider that understands these requirements and can help guide formatting and placement without compromising design integrity.

Design for Shelf Impact

Your label competes in a highly visual environment. Strong contrast, readable typography, and a clear focal point are essential. Avoid overcrowding the design with too much text or too many visual elements. Instead, aim for a balanced layout that draws the eye quickly and communicates your brand at a glance.

Clean, intentional design tends to outperform overly complex compositions.

Align Label Design with Your Brand Story

Consumers are increasingly drawn to authenticity. Your label should reflect your brand personality, whether that is traditional, modern, rustic, or experimental. For wine, this may mean elegant typography and subtle textures that communicate heritage. For craft beer, it could involve bold graphics or playful illustrations. Consistency across your product line reinforces brand recognition and builds trust over time.

Choose the Right Materials and Finishes

The physical feel of your label contributes to perceived quality. Premium materials such as textured papers, metallic foils, or matte finishes can enhance the customer experience. Consider how your product will be stored and handled as well. Wine bottles may require labels that withstand moisture and temperature changes, while beer cans might benefit from durable adhesives and finishes that resist wear. Labels by Pulizzi offers a range of material and finishing options tailored to beverage packaging needs.

Optimize for Different Formats

Your label should perform well across multiple formats, including bottles, cans, and digital listings. Ensure your design scales effectively and remains legible at different sizes. This is especially important for online sales, where your label often appears as a small thumbnail. Simple, bold elements tend to translate better across platforms.

Leverage Color Strategically

Color plays a significant role in influencing perception. Dark, rich tones often convey sophistication and depth for wines, while brighter palettes can signal freshness or creativity in beer branding. Be intentional with your color choices and ensure they align with your product positioning. Also consider how colors will print on your chosen material, as finishes can alter their appearance.

Incorporate Functional Design Elements

Beyond aesthetics, your label should be practical. Easy to read text, clear hierarchy of information, and proper placement on the container all contribute to usability. Labels should apply smoothly without wrinkling or peeling, maintaining a polished look from production to consumption.

Test and Iterate

Before committing to a full production run, test your label design. Gather feedback from customers, retailers, or internal teams. Small adjustments in font size, color contrast, or layout can significantly improve effectiveness. Iteration ensures your final product resonates with your target audience.

Your Labels Are Ready!

A successful wine or beer label balances compliance, creativity, and functionality. It tells your story while meeting industry standards and standing out on the shelf. Investing in thoughtful design and high-quality production not only enhances your product’s appeal but also reinforces your brand’s credibility in a competitive market.

An Upcoming Industry

The legal cannabis market continues to evolve, and product labeling remains one of the most critical components of regulatory compliance and brand positioning. For cannabis industry business owners, labels are not simply decorative elements. They communicate required information, protect your license, and shape how consumers perceive your product.

Below are key best practices to guide your labeling strategy.

1. Understand Regulatory Requirements Before Designing

Cannabis labeling requirements vary by state, but most jurisdictions require specific information to appear clearly and accurately.

Common elements include:

  • Product name and type
  • Cannabinoid potency such as THC and CBD content
  • Net quantity
  • Batch or lot number
  • Health warnings and age restrictions
  • Manufacturer or licensee information
  • State-mandated universal symbols

Before finalizing artwork, confirm that your label layout accommodates all required elements with appropriate font size, placement, and visibility. Designing first and adjusting later often results in costly reprints.

2. Prioritize Clarity and Legibility

Regulators and consumers both expect clear, readable information. Use high-contrast color combinations and clean typography to ensure compliance text remains legible. Avoid overcrowding the layout or reducing font size simply to make the design fit.

Material choice also affects readability. The right finish and print quality ensure that small compliance text remains sharp and does not blur, smear, or fade over time.

3. Balance Compliance With Brand Identity

Compliance is mandatory, but branding remains essential. Your label is a primary touchpoint for consumer recognition and trust. Strategic layout planning allows required information to coexist with strong visual identity.

Material and finish options such as full-color printing, clear labels, and custom die-cut shapes can elevate presentation while maintaining regulatory standards. A professional label partner can help you achieve visual impact without sacrificing required elements.

4. Select Durable Materials for Product Conditions

Cannabis products are exposed to varying environments including humidity, refrigeration, frequent handling, and storage. Label materials must withstand these conditions without peeling, smudging, or fading.

Water-resistant stocks, laminated finishes, and high-quality adhesives are particularly important for products such as tinctures, concentrates, and flower containers. Durable labeling protects both your compliance information and your brand image.

5. Incorporate Tracking and Transparency Tools

Many cannabis markets now encourage or require QR codes or scannable elements that link to lab results and batch data. These tools enhance transparency and build consumer trust.

Ensure that scannable elements are printed at sufficient resolution and placed where they remain accessible without interfering with other required information.

6. Establish an Ongoing Compliance Review Process

Cannabis regulations change frequently. A label that meets standards today may require updates tomorrow. Conduct periodic audits of your packaging and labeling to ensure continued compliance.

Working with a knowledgeable label provider allows you to respond quickly to regulatory updates and reduce the risk of enforcement issues or product recalls.

7. Partner with an Experienced Label Provider

Professional label manufacturing goes beyond printing. It includes material selection, design guidance, production consistency, and quality control. An experienced partner can help you streamline compliance, reduce waste, and maintain brand consistency across product lines.

Labels by Pulizzi offers customizable labeling solutions backed by decades of printing expertise. From selecting appropriate materials to ensuring production precision, working with a trusted provider helps cannabis businesses maintain compliance while presenting a polished, professional product.

Our Team Will Guide You

In the cannabis industry, labeling is both a regulatory obligation and a competitive advantage. Investing in thoughtful, well-produced labels is an operational decision that supports long-term growth and credibility.

In today’s competitive marketplace, where hundreds or even thousands of products compete for customer attention, your label is more than just a sticker. It is your brand’s handshake and your story’s first impression. It sets the tone, conveys your values, and establishes the identity that customers recognize and trust.

At Labels by Pulizzi, we believe the right label does more than tell people what your product is. It tells them who you are.

Why Labels Matter More Than Ever

  • First impressions count. For many consumers, the label is the first touchpoint with your product. A high-quality, well-designed label can instantly communicate professionalism, quality, and trustworthiness long before a buyer even reads the details.
  • Brand identity and storytelling. A label is a chance to tell your story. Through color, typography, texture, and layout, a label becomes part of your brand’s narrative.
  • Compliance and clarity. In regulated industries like food, beverage, or pharmaceuticals, labels serve as critical communication tools including regulatory information, ingredient lists, safety warnings, and traceability data. Your label must be accurate and also reflect the brand behind it.
  • Shelf appeal and differentiation. A strong label distinguishes your product on crowded shelves. It draws the eye, speaks to your values, and signals that the product is worth picking up.

Every label and every printed material becomes part of your brand’s larger narrative.

Tips & Insights from Labels by Pulizzi

Your Label = Your Brand Communicator

In the crowded marketplace of today, every detail matters, and your labels might be one of the most powerful branding tools at your disposal. A well-designed, high-quality label does more than just describe a product. It can elevate your brand, command attention, and build trust.

At Labels by Pulizzi, with decades of experience and over a billion custom labels delivered for clients, we’ve seen firsthand how smart labeling decisions can make or break a brand impression.

Here’s how to get more out of your custom labels, leveraging the services and capabilities we offer at Labels by Pulizzi.

1. Start With Strategy: Define Your Label’s Role

Before jumping into shapes, colors, or materials, think strategically:

  • What’s the primary purpose? Is this label meant for branding, compliance (especially for food or pharmaceutical products), tamper evidence, or promotional engagement such as redeemable coupons?
  • Who will see it and in what environment? Labels on a product that sits on a shelf behave differently in lighting and exposure than those on industrial equipment or medical vials.
  • How will it integrate with packaging, brand identity, and marketing? Your label should feel like a natural extension of your brand’s look, voice, and positioning.

Starting with clarity on role and environment helps you make more informed decisions on materials, finishes, coatings, and printing methods.

2. Choose the Right Materials & Finishes

One of the biggest mistakes is underestimating the impact of materials and coatings. A label that warps, fades, or peels will undermine brand credibility. At Labels by Pulizzi, we offer robust options to match your product’s demands.

  • Pressure-sensitive labels are versatile and user-friendly, great for many packaging surfaces.
  • Laminates and coatings (matte, gloss, UV varnish, aqueous coatings) protect your label from scuffs, moisture, and UV fade while giving visual texture and tactile value.
  • Durable materials for harsh conditions include chemical-resistant, moisture-resistant, or tamper-evident substrates for sectors like pharmaceuticals or industrial goods.
  • UL Certified labels are essential for electronics, appliances, and other regulated products that need durable, standards-compliant marking.

Pro Tip: Always request a sample or proof to see how the label behaves under expected real-world conditions such as humidity, abrasion, and UV exposure.

3. Leverage Advanced Printing Capabilities for Distinctiveness

Your design is only as good as its reproduction. This is where Labels by Pulizzi’s technical capabilities shine.

  • Up to 8-color flexographic printing enables rich, bold visuals while maintaining high consistency across large runs.
  • Web widths up to 13 inches allow for wide-format or continuous printing across broader labels or multi-up layouts.
  • Variable data and digital printing are perfect for serial numbers, personalized messaging, regional variations, or limited edition runs.
  • In-house plate making and full bindery or finishing services ensure tight quality control, faster turnaround, and alignment between design intent and execution.

These capabilities mean you can push the envelope on label creativity without sacrificing consistency, speed, or reliability.

4. Keep Design Clean, Clear, and Brand-Forward

Even the best materials can’t rescue a cluttered or confusing label. When designing:

  • Embrace visual hierarchy so the brand name, logo, and key product attributes stand out first.
  • Pay attention to legibility and contrast, especially for small items like vials or bottles.
  • Use white space and restraint rather than cramming every idea onto the label.
  • Incorporate subtle brand cues such as color palette, fonts, or micro-patterns so the label feels unmistakably yours even from a distance.
  • When adding variable elements or coupons, ensure your base label design accommodates them gracefully.

Our in-house graphic design team can help translate your vision into a print-ready layout that plays to your label’s unique context and constraints.

5. Think Beyond Labels: Complementary Print and Promo Touches

Your label is a focal point, but it doesn’t have to stand alone. Labels by Pulizzi also offers commercial print and promotional item services that let you extend the brand experience beyond the product itself.

  • Match your label branding with booklets, brochures, or inserts in packaging to educate, upsell, or tell your brand story.
  • Use branded promotional items such as bags, mugs, hats, and giveaways to reinforce your identity and build brand recall.
  • Employ data processing and variable print services to tie direct mail, promotional labels, or coupons into your product campaigns.

This integrated thinking helps your brand feel cohesive, intentional, and memorable at every touchpoint.

6. Test, Iterate, and Measure Impact

A label isn’t something to set and forget. To maximize brand impact:

  • Pilot test in-store or with focus groups to gauge shelf appeal, legibility, durability, and intuitiveness.
  • Track product returns, complaints, or damage reports to see if label durability meets expectations.
Monitor sales lift, coupon redemptions, or customer feedback after introducing label changes.
  • Use version control and variable data to test small design changes (A/B testing) across SKUs or regions.

Because we offer variable printing, short runs, and flexible finishing, we can support iterative changes without large waste or expense.

7. Partner with Experts Who Understand Print Realities

One of the biggest advantages of working with Labels by Pulizzi is having a partner who understands both the creative and technical sides of labeling. We’re more than a print vendor, we’re an extension of your team.

  • We consult on substrate, coatings, color matching, layout, regulatory compliance, and finishing.

  • We handle complex jobs including wide web, multi-up, laminating, and variable data so you can focus on your core business.
  • Our responsive customer service and attention to detail have earned long-term client relationships that span decades.

Having that expert guidance can help you avoid costly mistakes and deliver labels that truly elevate your brand.

Why quality printing is more than just a finishing touch

One Print to Save Them All…

At first glance, printing might seem like a minor detail in the bigger picture of your business. But when it comes to presenting your brand with clarity, consistency, and confidence, professional printing plays a far more important role than many realize.

At Labels by Pulizzi, we specialize in helping businesses bring their branding to life through high-quality printed labels and packaging. Here are three key ways professional printing can elevate your product – and why it matters more than you might think.

1. Strong First Impressions Start Here

Consumers form opinions in seconds! And your packaging is often the first thing they see. Professionally printed labels convey quality, trustworthiness, and attention to detail, all of which help shape a customer’s perception before they even try your product.

From vibrant color reproduction to clean, sharp lines and premium finishes, our professional print capabilities ensure your product looks polished, consistent, and ready for retail. It’s more than just looking good. It’s about building immediate credibility.

2. Consistency You Can Count On

Nothing disrupts a brand’s image like inconsistent packaging. Slight color shifts, blurry graphics, or misaligned cuts can make even the best product feel unrefined. At Labels by Pulizzi, we use advanced printing technology and strict quality controls to ensure every label is produced with precision and uniformity.

Whether you’re printing hundreds or thousands, your labels will arrive exactly as expected – accurate, reliable, and aligned with your brand’s standards.

3. Texture, Finish, and the Power of Touch

Visual appeal is important, but the physical feel of your packaging also plays a vital role. Professional printing offers a wide range of finishes, from matte and gloss to textured and metallic that add depth and dimension to your product presentation.

These tactile elements subtly communicate value, giving customers a more memorable and high-end experience with your brand. It’s an investment that often pays off in both perception and performance.

Your Product Deserves Only the Best

At Labels by Pulizzi, we know that a product label does more than just share your name—it represents your brand, communicates your message, and protects your product’s identity. But not all labels are created equal. Whether you’re selling cosmetics, beverages, handmade crafts, or industrial goods, choosing the right type of label is key to long-lasting quality and customer appeal.

Let’s break down some of the most popular label types we offer, and help you discover which one is best for your product!

1. Waterproof Labels

Best For: Bath and body products, beverages, outdoor items, food containers

If your product is exposed to moisture, humidity, or direct contact with water, waterproof labels are a must. Made from durable synthetic materials like polypropylene or vinyl, these labels resist smudging, peeling, and fading—even in wet environments.

At Labels by Pulizzi, our waterproof labels are custom-engineered for both beauty and durability. They’re ideal for shampoo bottles, water bottles, beer cans, food packaging, and anything that needs to stand up to the elements without losing its appeal.

2. Laminated Labels

Best For: Long-term use, high-handling products, items that need extra protection

Laminated labels are your best friend when you want both visual impact and toughness. These labels have a protective clear film (laminate) applied over the printed surface, making them scratch-resistant, UV-resistant, and more durable overall.

Perfect for products that are frequently handled or exposed to friction, laminated labels also provide a premium, glossy or matte finish—enhancing your design while protecting it at the same time.

3. Clear Labels

Best For: Transparent containers, minimalist designs, a “no-label” look

Want your product to shine through? Clear labels provide a clean, seamless look that allows your container—and your product—to take center stage. They’re popular in luxury packaging, food and beverage, and health and beauty lines where presentation matters.

Our crystal-clear label stock blends into the background, giving the illusion of direct printing on your packaging, while still delivering high-quality graphics and strong adhesion.

4. Metallic Labels

Best For: Premium packaging, promotional items, holiday editions

Metallic labels add that extra shimmer and shine, catching the eye and giving your product a high-end feel. With metallic finishes in gold, silver, and more, these labels are often used for wine bottles, gourmet foods, and cosmetics.

They’re not just about looks—foil labels also hold up well under pressure, and we utilize a metallic bop that gives the label a shine!

You’re likely searching Google, trying to figure out how to make the printing process easier. Here’s an insider tip: the printer you choose will make all the difference between a headache and a successful print run. Not only should your printer be your first choice, but it should also guide you through each step, offering support for troubleshooting, proofs, and problem-solving along the way.

To create a label order, your printer will need a few key details: high-quality artwork, quantity, shape/size, the surface the label will be applied to, and the number of colors in the design. These factors are crucial—they influence cost and help ensure a smooth production process.

Let’s dive deeper into the specifics…

#1: Preparing Your Creatives

Pop quiz: High-resolution PDF or vector file… what are those? If you’re scratching your head, don’t worry! The fact is, these are the two types of files your printer will need to ensure the best results for your project. Let’s say you’re not a computer person and you don’t have someone on your team to help with getting these files or creating a design. No problem! Our team can guide you through the entire process, with in-house creative support available.

#2: Choosing the Right Substrate

Next, giving some thought to what the label will be applied to can save you time in the process. Is it going on bottles, packaged food, or containers? The type of surface and the environment the label will be exposed to are critical in determining the right substrate. For example, beer labels often get wet, so we need a substrate that will adhere even when exposed to water. The more details you provide beforehand, the smoother the process will go. Additionally, there are many printing methods available, so a little research before committing your project to production can go a long way. Here, we’ll get you started!

#3: Ensuring Quality Results

If you’re doing a small print run, you can typically expect a faster turnaround. For larger or continuous print runs, the initial turnaround time may be a bit longer, but once everything is set up and the process is streamlined, repeatable prints should be a piece of cake!

While it’s important to get high-quality print results, it’s best to adjust your expectations away from same-day turnaround. The typical turnaround time we provide customers is two weeks. We always strive to complete orders earlier, but that’s our standard. Teamwork is key, and results are usually much better when no one is rushing. However, you should always expect visuals to be legible and clear, with no pixelation (as long as your original creatives are of high quality). Some printers may not alert you if your images for print are below quality, but we would never let that happen!

A Breakdown of What to Expect for Your Project

What Is Offset?

Let’s start with a definition: Offset printing is a method of creating high-quality printed materials in large quantities by utilizing a system of rotating cylinders to stamp ink onto various mediums. While we mention various mediums, this technique is primarily used for printing on paper. When bulk printing is the name of the game, offset is the ideal choice, as it efficiently handles print runs of 1,000 or more! It’s important to note that this is not flexographic printing, you can learn more about that technique right here.

Let’s dive in…

The Different Types of Offset Printing

Offset printing is broken down into three simple categories. Each approach has its own unique method for creating crisp prints. No matter which technique is used for your project, you can expect high-quality and desirable results for your bulk printing needs. The three types include: Web, Sheet-fed, and Quick-set. Don’t worry, just keep scrolling for more!

Web

Ever wondered how books or magazines are printed? Well, wonder no longer. Web offset printing is how it’s done. This approach utilizes a continuous sheet of paper that is only cut or separated after the printing process. This method streamlines the printing process, making it ideal for large orders intended for distribution.

Sheet-fed

The main difference here is that pages and/or paper rolls are cut before printing. This enables a more targeted print for each piece of paper that goes through the machine. As paper is fed into the machine, each single piece of paper is pushed along via an air jet. This allows for individual printing errors to be resolved quickly, without stopping the entire printing process as each sheet is already cut.

Quick-set

As the name suggests, this method dries the quickest out of the three and is ideal for those who desire a quick turnaround time. By using quick-set ink, the images are set quickly into the medium, which in turn saves ink. This method is great for periodicals, trademarks, or even instruction manuals.

So, What Do I Pick?

Actually, we’ll do the picking for ya! As one of our customers, it’s helpful to know about the different approaches to printing, but you don’t have to sweat making a choice here.
